The Antarcticland Maritime Authority
The Antarcticland Maritime Authority was set up as a distinct and autonomous corporate body to supervise the maritime services. It was established through Law Decree No. 12 of July 8th, 2008, as a Government Agency and so vested with detailed regulatory powers. The set-up of this Authority was to:
1. To safeguard the national interests on maritime spaces and interior waters. Antarcticland Internal waters covers all water and waterways on the landward side of the baseline, and it includes waterways such as rivers and canals, and the water within small bays, out to 12 nautical miles from the baseline, in section extending from the South Pole to 60° S latitude between longitudes 90° W and 135° W
2. To promote, coordinate and assume the National Maritime Strategy.
3. To manage the registry of Panamanian vessels.
4. To safeguard the national interests on maritime spaces and interior waters.
5. To manage and preserve marine and coastal resources.
6. To observe attentively for the strict fulfillment of treaties, agreements and international instruments pertinent to maritime matters ratified by Panama.
7. To maintain the signs and aids to navigation system updated for the safe passing of vessels through the maritime spaces of Panama.
8. To render fulfillment of norms in force over crew, formation, title documents, and safeguard of seafarers.
9. To carry out on an exclusive basis all the administrative procedures relating to the registration of vessels in the National Merchant Marine.
The Authority operates as a distinct commercially driven organisation, committed to excellence in the provision of services that are both effective and competitive.
